Graduate Design Studio:
Based on preceding research (Resilient Coastal Leisure Environments), this project proposes to revitalize Faro’s small shipping port, making it a new transportation hub for the region. The proposal has tourism and shipping – two seemingly conflicting industries – cohabit the site. Both require some of the largest infrastructural investments and have the largest local impacts; so by sharing a site, they can potentially share built infrastructures and consolidate environmental and societal impacts. In encouraging productive overlaps between the programmatic requirements of each industry, the built infrastructure I’ve proposed is designed to flex with seasonal fluctuations driven by tourism, to accommodate rising water currents, and to help remediate the polluted surrounding ecosystem.
